Instrumental music

Frenchville State School offers a comprehensive instrumental music program providing students with the opportunity to become musicians and experience the expressive qualities of music through learning to play an instrument. The instructors are employees of Education Queensland.

The instrumental music program is offered on band and orchestral instruments for students in Years 4 – 6 in a group setting. Tuition is not offered on an individual basis. Groups vary in size from 3 – 10 students according to factors including instrument type, age and ability of students and teaching space. Weekly instruction usually consists of one 30-minute lesson (scheduled during school time) and one ensemble rehearsal (usually scheduled before school or during lunch breaks).

An instrumental Student Resource Scheme is in place for the program. The Student Resource Scheme supports the replacement and repair of school instruments, purchase of instruments, district levy costs and performance costs.

In the first year of the program, students generally access a school instrument. After the first year of instruction, students are encouraged to purchase their own instrument. Some very large, expensive instruments are exempt from this request.

The school has at least two bands (Junior and Senior Band) and two orchestral groups (Paganini strings and String Orchestra). All instrumental students are expected to participate in performance opportunities both within and outside the school.

Choral instruction

Frenchville has two choirs, a junior and a senior group. Students making a commitment to choir are required to attend regular lunch time practices as well as before school rehearsals. Choirs perform at major events such as eisteddfods and our Spotlight Concert and school events including our annual ANZAC day and NAIDOC ceremonies.

Spotlight concert

The Spotlight Concert is conducted annually in our School Activity Centre. This gala night is a special event for our school and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase our arts program, including our choirs and instrumental ensembles.  This concert is a calendar highlight and is not to be missed.
